things I love this week

No more pyramid hoping to show nutrition doesn't have to be complicated. However, is this plate too simple?

Evolution thinks men are stupid and need visual evidence in order to be good fathers. Or perhaps it's just the mother convincing the man his baby is a spitting image.

Great Joplin photos and how the story was told on Twitter
Disasters bad, journalism good.

Best pediatrics photo ever
Here's our new pediatrician. Yes, we chose her because of this photo. This is the kind of logical, well-thought-out decision making that good parents are made of.

Make your own crayon box
I'm totally doing this.

Follow me
It's the first Friday of the month, which means you should most definitely click the "follow me" button right up there. Again with the logical connections...

confessions

Since it's apparently confessional Wednesday, it must be known I was born in Lexington, Kentucky - the horse capital of the world. You'll just have to believe me because my birth certificate has to be requested and there is probably some fee involved.

I am scared of riding horses. Even at camp.

We bought a Bradley Method book last night and chose the one without color pictures.

We bought the book for $17. The classes cost $300. Now we just have to read it without passing out. And take a one-day labor class at our hospital.

I read this birth story and totally cried at my desk. Big, fat tears of horror and panic. Then I read this one and felt better.

I'm not good with change. We're moving this weekend to a house with storage, a yard, a second bedroom - all good things. However, I am fixating on the logistics of carpooling to work, the small kitchen and figuring out how I can stretch the few maternity clothes I have to go a whole month since we won't have a washer and dryer until Memorial Day weekend.

My mom bought a poop light (think the lights that show blood on CSI). Now I am completely grossed out at the thought of the wall behind the toilet. I will be scrubbing.

Hallmark pre-paid postage cards are kind of lazy. But I love it.

I was really sad about leaving our apartment. Then a random neighbor talked to me for 15 minutes about how the mailman's wife is dying but that is no excuse to deliver our mail at 7 p.m. Also, he sleeps on the lobby couch for hours at a time. Then, I was ready to move.

I need to clean out my fridge. I have seriously considered throwing out really nice glass bowls. And putting our nice pans in the dishwasher.

I have put my underwear on inside out more than once this week. And it's Wednesday.

things i love today

spring weather

a new recipe
We made this orange chicken recipe this week. Just like a Chinese restaurant except no oil, MSG and way less sodium. I used Smart Chicken, which always tastes better and brown rice. And no orange zest because I don't have a zester or the time to zest anything.

retro kitchen
Our son will have a play kitchen. And if we win the lottery, it'll be this one. I'm thinking we should buy him a toy iron, too, because heaven knows we need someone who enjoys ironing in our house.

little boy clothes that don't say "all star" or "moms dig me"
It's possible. I've given a reprieve to animal clothing - some of it's cute. Luckily we have a Carters and OshKosh b'Gosh outlet within 20 minutes.

new baby blogs
I have my people blogs, my cooking blogs, my decorating on a budget blogs. Now it's baby blogs. My everyday reads now include:

pregnancy calendars
Because I love reading what's happening to my body and the baby boy's body. Except, you know, when the doctor tells you your life is a fantasy and really you're almost two weeks behind. But this Alpha Mom calendar is the best. Nice and sarcastic, just the way I like it. From 17 weeks: "I want to stab the world in the eyeballs with a fork right now, a little bit."

orange pillows
When we move to our new house we want to spruce up our old blue couches with bits of orange. I love these pillows from etsy. This one, too.

Happy weekend!

petty thankfulness

Let it be known, I am in fact most thankful for my faith, husband, family, roof over my head, healthy body, food in my pantry (like I have one of those..) and money in my bank account.

But I'm also thankful for these other really unimportant things.

Facebook
How else would I know who is mad at whom and deleted them as a friend in an immature rage, when my 10-year high school reunion is or who is connecting with a random song lyric today. I mean, thank goodness for that last nugget of information.

The floor of Shea's car
In the case that I should wonder what Shea's been up to the last year, my curiosity is quickly curbed by a look-sey into his car. Receipts, smashed paper cups, church bulletins, Gatorade bottles, junk mail and hats.

Fine point, retractable Sharpies
I love them. Love. Love. Love.

Right turns on red
There is one intersection near my work where you cannot turn on red. This makes me realize how much I appreciate the turning-on-red rule. Also, U-turns. I like those, too.

My mattress
When we got married, we had the option of a $600 mattress that would eventually sag in the middle and push our bodies on top of each other during sleep or a $1,500 mattress that made me want to live in my bed. Best $1,500 we've ever spent.

Brussels sprouts
I had them at a restaurant this past weekend, in butter and roasted. Shockingly, this was my first experience with this vegetable and even more shockingly, I am in love with them.

K-State basketball
It makes things way more fun to be cheering for a top five team. For example, tonight I get to go to a No. 1 vs. No. 3 game at Sprint Center. It will be loud, nerve wracking, blood pumping fun.

Kansas City weather
I know I beat this dead horse a lot, but I am super thankful that there is no ice, no snow, no freezing cold. Just a nice cool Thanksgiving with sun and fall jackets.
